Today, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs recognized Fort Lewis College (FLC) as a for the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. This distinction highlights FLC’s commitment to global engagement and its support for faculty pursuing international opportunities.

Two 麻豆免费高清无砖码区scholars have been selected for the 2024-25 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program, marking a significant achievement for the college. Professors Ellen Paul and Justin McBrayer have each been awarded their second Fulbright, which will allow them to conduct research and teach abroad in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Italy, respectively.

“We are proud of our faculty members for their dedication to academic excellence and global scholarship,” said Interim President Steve Schwartz. “Their Fulbright experiences will not only enhance their research but also bring invaluable international perspectives back to our classrooms and students.”

Paul, a history professor, is in Bosnia and Herzegovina to study reconciliation efforts in post-conflict societies and explore connections to FLC’s own history as a former federal Indian boarding school. McBrayer, a philosophy professor, will be based at the University of Genoa in Italy, where he will research strategies that liberal democracies can use to combat fake news while maintaining freedom of thought.

"The Fulbright program places American faculty into classrooms all over the world.  In an era of global interdependence yet rising nationalism, we need that kind of scholar-citizen diplomacy more than ever," McBrayer said.

"There is so much more to learn and experience in the next three and a half months," said Paul, who arrived in Sarajevo earlier this month.

"As a genocide and Holocaust historian, I'm eager to learn how the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina have recovered since the war andEllen Paul genocide of the 1990s. Sarajevo, my home base, stands as a testament to resilience and still bears scars from the longest siege in modern history," Paul added. "Over 13,000 people, including more than 5,000 civilians, lost their lives during the nearly four-year blockade, as various ethnic Serb forces relentlessly shelled the city.  Through my experiences here, I hope to gain deeper insights that will enhance my teaching and research.”

In addition, David V谩squez-Hurtado was recognized for serving on the Fulbright National Screening Committee for the 2025-2026 cycle. V谩squez-Hurtado, Ph.D., is an associate progressor of Borders & Languages, Sociology & Human Services, Criminology and Justice.

“As a member of the National Screening Committee, you have played a crucial role in assuring that the finest candidates will be represented in the program next year,” said Daniel Kramer, Director of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program via email.

The Fulbright Program, the U.S. government's flagship international academic exchange initiative, has supported over 400,000 participants since its inception in 1946. Fulbrighters foster global understanding through research, teaching, and collaboration.
