DURANGO, Colo. — Fort Lewis College announced today that Jenni Trujillo, Ed.D., Dean of the School of Education and a longtime advocate for equity in education, will step down at the end of the academic year.
In her new role, Dr. Trujillo will lead a national initiative exploring the intersection of educational equity and artificial intelligence. The project aligns with her lifelong commitment to culturally responsive education and innovative learning models.
An Â鶹Ãâ·Ñ¸ßÇåÎÞשÂëÇøalumna, Trujillo has played a central role in shaping the College’s educational vision for over thirty years. From helping establish El Centro de Muchos Colores as a student to leading the School of Education through a period of significant growth and national recognition, her impact has been profound.
“Dr. Trujillo’s leadership has transformed the School of Education and strengthened our institution,” said Interim President Steve Schwartz. “We are grateful for her service and thrilled she will continue to contribute her expertise as a consultant during this transition.”
Appointed Dean in 2020, Dr. Trujillo guided the school through reaccreditation, expanded graduate programs, and launched dual-enrollment initiatives that opened new early college pathways. Under her leadership, the Campbell Center for Early Learning earned national accreditation in 2024, and the School of Education secured nearly $7 million in external funding to diversify and support the teaching workforce.
Her tenure also included the growth of programs focused on Indigenous education and language revitalization, including the Southwest Indigenous Language Development Institute (SILDI), strengthening partnerships with tribal communities across the Four Corners.
“Dr. Trujillo’s vision and commitment to language education and revitalization has been critical to FLC’s reconciliation work. She has inspired generations of Indigenous language educators,” said Heather Shotton, Vice President of Diversity Affairs and Incoming President.
“Jenni has been a steady and visionary leader—deeply rooted in community, fiercely committed to equity, and a trusted mentor to many,” said Provost Mario Martinez. “Her legacy will be felt for years to come.”
Dr. Trujillo, who also served on the recent Presidential Search Committee, is widely recognized across Colorado and nationally for her work in multilingual education, culturally responsive teaching, and educational leadership.
“Serving in the role of Dean of the School of Education has been an extraordinary privilege and I’m excited to continue to contribute to the vibrancy of our institution,” she said. “As a Fort Lewis College alumna, faculty member, and leader, my roots here run deep. I remain committed to our mission and would be honored to continue contributing to the vibrant future of this institution and our region.”
Details about a farewell celebration and the interim leadership plan for the School of Education will be announced soon.
